The creative lifestyle has many ups and downs-it’s anything but typical. After a big recital, an audition, or completion of any big project, we usually need some time to rest from the insanity that the performance created. But what happens next, is what we’re interested in for this episode. How do we recover from the down time, and get back to work.

Some thought provoking conversation coming up…the battle between motivation and discipline, the force of Resistance, and tuning out or maybe giving into the call of Netflix (that beautiful song of the siren)

We exists as a Podcast to build community for classical musicians, and talk about what life is really like.

And If you’re new to the podcast, you can read more about who we are

But in short, if our podcast was a high budget hollywood movie

Anna Luce: would be played by Julia Louis Dreyfus

Jessica Wiersma: would be played by Zooey Daschnell

Christian Marshall: Would be played by Benedict Cummberbatch

And Michael O’Gieblyn (that’s me), I’d be portrayed by Russel Crowe, think more Master and Commander, rather than Les Miserables

Actionable Steps:

1) Don’t wait for “inspiration” or “the muse” to hit you – get up and practice!

2) Give yourself “permission” to have a lazy day and/or day off. Go for it! We all need time to recuperate.

Some Books:
Word by Word-by Anne Lamott

The War of Art: Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles-Steven Pressfield

Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity-David Allen

Sloth video

3) Get some sleep! Take care of yourself – it helps physically and mentally!

4) Basic self-care – eat more than just bread and/or chips, get more sleep, exercise!

5) Give yourself little “assignments” or goals to accomplish. Accomplishing these goals helps boost your confidence and sets you up for success for your next goal!

6) Go out into the world! Whether it be a coffee shop, a class at the gym, an hour at the museum, or a walk with your dog, just get out. Holing up at home can sound appealing (especially in the winter) but it doesn’t do anything to help our mental health or help kick start us out of the “sloth” mode.

7) Break things down into the smallest actionable item – helps make things seem more manageable.
