On the show today, we’re diving into the topic of finding the courage to change your life. It takes a tremendous amount of courage to take a big audition, ask a teacher for a trial lesson, or put anything out in the world with your name on it. And the thing is, great things are waiting for you on the other side of your fear, anxiety, and insecurities. So how do we get this courage to stand up and ask for what we want, or dare to change the world?
Sometimes we’re not even aware that the smallest actions, like just picking up your instrument every day takes a lot of courage too. And in fact, they’re not really that much different. So, I invite you to join us for our discussion, because
- You were made to do something great,
- to make something beautiful,
- and to have the courage to make a difference.
We exist here as a podcast to encourage and inspire classical musicians one service at a time
I am Michael O’Gieblyn, I am a violinist, I was a member of the Memphis symphony orchestra for a while, subbed in the Nashville symphony and the recording industry there as well. I created OrchestraExcerpts.com, a resource to help musicians learn excerpts for orchestra auditions, and also this podcast to talk about life as a freelance musician. Because it’s tough. I am joined by my co-hosts:
Anna Luce, a violinist in New York who you can find playing the hottest show on Broadway,
Jessica Wiersma, one of the top subs in the Indianapolis Symphony.
Christian Marshall- A violist living in Graz, Austria who performs all over the country with various ensembles, most of which I can’t even pronounce, so I won’t try.
And these 3 people are some of my closest friends. We strive to talk about deep issues related being a musician, but in a fun, encouraging, and authentic way. But like most people, we have days where we’re not feeling great also. And today was one of those days. Jess for one was battling a head cold, and the rest of us were kind of feeling the weight of some of the uncertainty in our lives coming up this summer. And so, like the good chamber musicians that we are. We all sort of adopted a different tone in this episode in consideration that Jess wasn’t feeling 100%.
In some ways, Jess demonstrates one of the best lessons from this episode, and that is the courage to show up, and put yourself out there, even when you’d rather just go back to bed. So thank, you Jess for fighting through.

Discussion points we mention:
- Picking up your instrument is often the first act of courage we face
- Showing up is courageous (especially when you’d rather just go back to bed)
- Seeing a project or goal to completion (actually going to the audition, or lesson)
- Saying “No” to the busyness that can limit your practice time
- You need some fear or an uncomfortable situation to summon the courage-If you’re not taking any risks, or pushing yourself, you don’t need courage.
- Being courageous is performing even though you’re about “to pee-your-pants”
Links we Mentioned:
“Courage doesn’t necessarily look like a scene from Braveheart:”
Christian talks about the similarities between high diving and performing, and overcoming fear:
“Rejection Proofing TED Talk” – I think this is dumb, because there are no consequences (at least that you care about) if you fail.
But it’s still a feel-good story about the generosity of mankind
