Listen to the Podcast Below:
This is our final episode in a series where we dig a little deeper into who we are and some themes from our journey. Today is Jessica’s story about working hard to become a professional musician when early teachers told her she didn’t have what it takes.
So this debate comes up quite a lot: Which is more important:
Hard Work or Talent?
We’ve heard it said:
“Hard work beats talent, when talent doesn’t work hard”
But first let’s read the fine print: Talented at what? Musicality and Emotional-connected playing, or Mechanical Technique? Memorization? Intonation? Sight Reading?
Can any skill be learned?
But really, why does it matter? When you hear a great performer, do you think: “I wonder how talented they are, or how much they had to work?” Probably not.
The only reason for mastering technique is to make sure the body does not prevent the soul from expressing itself. ~ La Meri ~
