BWitzelBert Witzel began playing the double bass when he attended the Baltimore School for the Arts (high school), studying with Lauri Bennett, Peabody Conservatory Graduate and free-lance bassist, and Rick Barber, assistant principal bass of the National Symphony Orchestra. Bert was accepted into the Curtis Institute of Music, where he studied with Hal Robinson, principal bass of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and Edgar Meyer, renowned bass soloist.

In 2004 Bert was appointed principal bass of the Louisville Orchestra. In addition to his job with the Louisville Orchestra, Bert also performs on occasion as a substitute with major symphony orchestras such as the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, and Detroit Symphony Orchestra. In the summer he performs at the Artosphere Festival, the Oregon Coast Music Festival, and the Peter Britt Music Festival. Bert also has an active free-lance career, performing with the Orchestra Kentucky Bowling Green, the Kentucky Center Chamber Players, and other local ensembles.

Bert is also an avid teacher of the double bass, teaching bass lessons to private students at his home, and also at the Christian Academy of Louisville and Bellarmine University.
